An allergic reaction to ingredients present in our food is a matter of life and death for some people.
Federal Assistant Minister for Health, David Gillespie, encouraged food businesses in Australia to make sure they label their food correctly to minimise the harm and potential fatalities caused by allergic reactions to some ingredients.
“Australia has one of the most strict food safety regimes in the world,” Minister Gillespie said.
“As a doctor practicing medicine for more than 30 years I have seen what an allergic reaction can do to the human body.
“During Food Allergy Week – 14 to 20 May 2017 – I want to impress upon food businesses the importance of getting their labelling right.
“I welcome the announcement by Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) that they are running a month-long campaign to remind food businesses about the importance of allergen labelling.
“We have mandatory food labelling laws in Australia and it’s vitally important that food businesses label their products correctly and keep people safe from the distress of what is essentially an avoidable allergic reaction.”
