Four more local Men’s Sheds secure Federal funding

7 May 2018

Four local Men’s Sheds have been awarded funding under the Federal Coalition Government’s National Shed Development Programme.

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie today congratulated Taree Showground, Taree Manning River, Coomba and Harrington Men’s Sheds on their successful application for the grants.

“Like similar sheds across the electorate and throughout Australia, these local men’s shed offer great benefits to local men who need a bit of space and some friendly, easy-going company,” Dr Gillespie said.

“The Federal Coalition Government recognises these benefits and is providing a total of $5.1 million over three years to the national men’s sheds movement.”

In the latest round of funding, the local projects to receive support include:

*Taree Manning River Men’s Shed – Men’s Health Day – $1,000.00

*Taree Showground Men’s Shed – Thicknesser, drum sander, delivery – $3,388.00

*The Coomba Men’s Shed – Compound mitre saw with laser, metal cut off saw, variable speed belt sander, planer, circular saw, water heater, urn, First Aid kit -$1,406.00

*Harrington Men’s Shed – Defibrillator – $2,450.00

“Men are talking about their health more and more, and the men’s shed provides a safe and friendly environment for them to do so. Men’s sheds are integral to the community and the benefits to men’s health are widely acknowledged,” Dr Gillespie said.

In 2016, the rate of suicide among Australian males was more than three times that of females.

Heath Minister Greg Hunt said although mental illness affects both men and women, men are less likely to seek help or talk about their feelings.

“Feeling part of a social group is important to our emotional and mental health and every day Men’s Sheds around the country provide men with an opportunity for companionship,” Minister Hunt said.

The grants programme provides funding for health improvement activities, the purchase of tools and equipment, community projects and training, and for building maintenance and development.
